Yoshi-P Discusses Scions’ Portrayal in Dawntrail Based on Player Feedback

Player opinions varied regarding the plot throughout the Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail expansion. Many were disgruntled, arguing it felt like an extended sidequest, or expressing dissatisfaction with how the Scions characters were portrayed. There were differing views about what the Scions’ role should’ve been – some players desired more involvement, some less. But they all concurred that the Scions should not have been marginalized as they seemed to be in this expansion.

Anecdotally, though a few Scions didn’t receive the attention I would’ve liked, I thought the telling of the story was in keeping with what was promised – sort of a summer vacation adventure. You’re transported to a place where everyone goes about their own business, getting together occasionally. You make new acquaintances during your stay, though whether these relationships will last remains to be seen.

On reflection, it’s understandable why players would want more (or less) from characters who have journeyed with us from the beginning.

Yoshi-P, in an interview with PC Gamer during Gamescom, mentioned that the developers were toying with the Dawntrail narrative. The aim was to highlight each of the Scions as well as introduce new characters, and gauge player reaction. It became clear that there were contrasting player desires – wanting the Scions cut out, or wanting them reinstated. As was anticipated, both sentiments were expressed.

The important takeaway, as per the development team, was that players disliked insincere attempts to use the Scions. For future iterations, developers will probably integrate the Scions more meaningfully. Though Yoshi-P did suggest that absence of particular Scions could prove unpopular, their nonappearance in one story is not indicative of their permanent removal. PC Gamer extrapolated that the Scions may rotate depending upon the narrative in the MMORPG‘s successive versions.
