WoW’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations: Blackrock Depths Raid and More

Warcraft and World of Warcraft are turning 30 and 20 years old respectively in 2024. We knew from last year’s Blizzcon that there were plans to celebrate these milestones, but we didn’t have specifics about what was in store for World of Warcraft and its players in the MMORPG. The details have just been revealed and the celebration is shaping up to be quite spectacular.

It’s not just an “event” — a whole patch has been dedicated to it.

The first treat is Blackrock Depths receiving a raid update with 8 main bosses and 5 mini ones. The raid will accommodate 10-15 players and has LFR, Normal, and Heroic options.

Next is an outdoor experience reminiscent of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj opening, introduced by none other than Chromie. As time travel is involved, expect to encounter incongruous adversaries in Silithus and during that particular era, including the Legion, the Scourge, Tichondrius, and even Kel’Thuzad.

If it’s Timewalking you’re after, you’re in luck — but not for Battle for Azeroth. Classic dungeons like Deadmines, Zul’Farrak, Dire Maul, and Stratholme are back. Dire Maul and Stratholme will have two wings each. These additions, while lined up for the 20th anniversary events, are set to continue as part of the regular rotation of Timewalking dungeons post-event. Rewards and drops are also getting an update, though there’s still a possibility of receiving classic loot.

A celebration at the Caverns of Time is a given, but now it’s exclusively outdoors, featuring fashion and storytelling contests, a “Mount Mania” show, an ice rink, pet area and even a sequel to Secrets of Azeroth. Look out for retired bosses making a comeback in Tanaris.

The video below highlights some exciting rewards including a 20th birthday balloon pet, a mini-dreadlord pet and additional awards from the Trading Post, which can be purchased using the event’s currency. The celebration will also introduce revamped Tier 2 sets, accommodating classes that weren’t available during its initial release.

New race updates include six new class options for the Dracthyr: Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warrior, and Warlock. The Dracthyr are also getting a Skyriding feature called Squadrons, which allows players to fly in formation. It’s fantastic!

Sit tight because the 11.05 patch, dedicated entirely to the anniversary celebration, is going to run for over 2 months! For those eager to join, it will soon be available on PTR.
