It’s safe to say, spiders may not be a favorite of everyone, especially when they’re uninvited guests in your beverage, perhaps flaunting their fearlessness by doing a backstroke. For individuals with acute arachnophobia — commonly expressed as “ARGH, SQUASH IT!” — spotting them in MMORPGs could be the worst part of a gaming experience.
Luckily, some games allow you to steer clear of this fear, like World of Warcraft. Interestingly, many might have missed that Blizzard’s game is introducing an Arachnophobia Mode in The War Within, which transforms all eight-legged beasts into crabs, and yes, lobsters as well.
Moreover, it seems that this mode alters the appearance of spider mounts and pets, so other players cannot panic you. Blizzard stated that they’re introducing the feature not solely for players, but also for numerous developers who equally find spiders distasteful. Given that The War Within is brimming with these eight-legged creatures, this move is well-timed.
Arachnophobia mode was quite the project (we also fancily called it ‘crab mode’)! I had a blast working on such a fun and crucial feature 🦀
