Since its release, Splitgate 2 has encountered some challenges, with player reviews on Steam indicating that it has not lived up to its main selling feature: the portals. Additionally, some players express that the game may not have been necessary and believe the developers would have been better suited to enhance support for the original Splitgate.
Regardless of their grievances with the newly launched F2P shooter, players have voiced their concerns.
The positive news is that 1047 Games seems to have acknowledged player feedback (and the less-than-stellar review scores on Steam) and has shared their intentions to address the issues, which involve reverting the game to beta status through early next year. During this period, they aim to refine progression, increase the number of portals on maps, improve monetization, and prioritize classic game modes, among other improvements.
But with good news also comes unfortunate news. The downside is that a number of employees at the company will be laid off. The announcement does not identify specific team members affected, but as the game’s development focus shifts back, it’s reasonable to assume it may involve personnel from community or marketing roles.
Nonetheless, there is a strategy in place to minimize the number of layoffs. As mentioned in their announcement, significant savings can be achieved by shutting down the original Splitgate servers, which have cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” to maintain over the past few years. For those team members facing job losses, the company is offering severance packages and assistance in securing new employment. Ultimately, the hope is to potentially rehire them in the future.
