Sony Should Develop A The Legend of Dragoon MMO

Nostalgia may be playing a role here, and it most likely is, considering it has been over two decades since I last engaged with the game. Recently, I pondered that one of my all-time favorite PlayStation RPGs could indeed be a fantastic fit for an MMORPG. Many of you might remember The Legend of Dragoon; for those who don’t, it was a JRPG developed by Sony.

The setting unfolds in a fantastical realm with three main races: humans, dragons, and Winglies. The Winglies were once the supreme race, having enslaved humans. However, this status quo changed as humans, aided by dragons, evolved into dragoons to overthrow the Winglies and reclaim their freedom. This historical conflict occurred 10,000 years prior to the main events of the game, presenting a wealth of narrative possibilities.

This implies that an MMORPG situated in The Legend of Dragoon universe wouldn’t necessarily center on the original game’s characters. Instead, it could explore the human struggle for liberation from the Winglies or delve into various events throughout that epoch. Essentially, it would offer players an engaging universe to inhabit—without the typical dragon-human confrontations.

However, it’s important to acknowledge that the game had its flaws. For instance, it followed a very linear progression. Unlike other titles, exploration of the overworld was limited. Certain story elements could also have seen improvement. Nevertheless, it remained an entertaining game within an intriguing world, ripe for expansion.

While it’s likely that all players would assume the role of dragoons, the game’s design allowed for each dragoon to possess unique abilities, facilitating a robust class system. Each character within the party had distinct skill sets.

Yet, developing MMORPGs is a monumental task, often fraught with risks. Furthermore, Sony isn’t particularly focused on MMOs at present.

That said, leveraging the popularity of gacha-style games could enable Sony to revive The Legend of Dragoon IP, allowing players to collect a roster of dragoon characters—or maybe even dragons. A few Winglies could make an appearance as well, even though they aren’t the heroes of the story.

Legend Of Dragoon 2

Ultimately, it would be wonderful to see this IP make a comeback, alongside others. However, rather than a remaster or a remake of the original game, as seen with other titles—a path that often doesn’t yield good results—crafting a fresh narrative within the same universe could resonate well. This would enable players to share experiences within this captivating world.

Nevertheless, large-scale games come with a high cost, lengthy development times, and considerable challenges. Additionally, The Legend of Dragoon didn’t match the success levels of other JRPGs during its release. Still, starting from a solid foundation is beneficial, provided it’s executed correctly. It could introduce a new generation of players to this vibrant world, especially given the difficulties of accessing older games due to hardware constraints. I firmly believe that sharing classic tales with new audiences is invaluable. Plus, I wouldn’t mind revisiting The Legend of Dragoon, making this an appealing opportunity.

Regrettably, this is likely just a dream. But, one can hope.
