Sea of Thieves will break up seasonal content releases in the interest of game stability

Sea of Thieves plans to stagger seasonal content releases for better game stability.

Regulars of Sea of Thieves would agree that the launch of Season 14 in October last year turned out to be pretty disastrous, with several bugs severe enough to compel Rare Ltd. to withdraw gameplay features to rectify them before rolling them out gradually. To avoid a similar scenario, the studio has decided to distribute features of Season 15 across the next three months for ensuring quality and stability of the game.

Features associated with a season will now get introduced with content updates that will happen every quarter of a year. Specifically, Season 15 updates claim to bring stability improvements that were a part of the developer “bash” the previous month, addition to Hunter’s Call, introduction of new megalodons this month, the launch of the throwing spear weapon in March, and the appearance of wild boars and megalodon hunting trips in April.

A supporting video explains the update plans in more detail as Drew Stevens, production director, shares more information about the performance and optimization adjustments as part of Season 15. He also shares why frames per second (FPS) above 120 on PCs negatively impact the gameplay experience and measures taken to prevent file modifications.

The significant optimization updates and shark features of Season 15 will be launched on February 20th, Thursday. The updates are quite substantial, hence be ready for server downtime starting early at 5:00 a.m. EST for maintenance.
