Overwatch 2 recently revealed its major revamp strategies for the upcoming seasons. The impression that this was in reaction to the game’s newfound competition was prevalent. Game director Aaron Keller confirmed this in an interview with GamesRadar, mentioning the significance of facing a fierce competitor.
“We find ourselves in a novel competitive environment which we haven’t previously encountered with Overwatch. ..[..].. This has proven to be a catalyst for us – we can’t afford to play safe any longer. And I truly believe that seasons 15 and 16 epitomize our willingness to take risks. But most importantly, it’s a call to action for our team – and for a team passionately engaged in crafting the game, this type of challenge is invigorating.”
Keller discusses the general discontent surrounding OW2, admitting that the sequel tag carries some weight, especially when it comes to its original launch and its current state. “Eventually, we must deal with this reality and confront it. However, now is not the time, at least for seasons 15 and 16,” he proclaims.
Early in the interview, he concedes that OW2 was too laid back in its content updates:
“Looking at our game, we realize that it’s either lacking something or hasn’t evolved as significantly as it should. Observing how Overwatch is played, you often feel as though you’re simply going through the motions after investing enough hours in it. We aim to breathe new life into the game but not just for the sake of diversity. We’re aiming to enhance the depth of gameplay.”
The interview also explores Keller’s views on how perks and Stadium Mode could disrupt the game’s formula, the rationale behind re-introducing lockboxes, and the introduction of hero ban options. Overall, it’s an honest and enlightening interview from a lead developer that previously seemed ensconced in his own bubble.
