Never Played Path of Exile, But I’m Excited for the Sequel

I haven’t experienced Path of Exile myself. It always appeared overly complex, and honestly, I’ve never been particularly drawn to ARPGs. However, after trying Diablo IV, I found it enjoyable. The same went for Lost Ark — I was fully engaged at launch. Those titles seem far more accessible than PoE ever did, and maybe that’s why I’m genuinely looking forward to Path of Exile 2 (especially once it launches as a free-to-play title, as it currently costs $30 for Early Access).

Rather than being a true sequel, PoE2 operates as a parallel experience. While it utilizes the same engine, it introduces revamped systems, modern designs, and an overall smoother gameplay experience. Familiarity with the original game is unnecessary, which is fantastic for individuals like me who were always interested but wary of the complexity. It feels like Grinding Gear Games is extending an invitation to new players — they’re maintaining the rich complexity that long-term fans appreciate, while also making it significantly more accessible for newcomers.

Just from observing gameplay footage, the modifications stand out. Combat appears quicker, more responsive, and easier to engage with. Animations and graphics show significant improvement. Personally, I’m excited about the dodge rolls and parrying — these features really enhance the experience. Boss encounters seem more intricate too; it gives off a Dark Souls atmosphere, but reimagined in ARPG format.

One major quality-of-life improvement is the skill gem system. In the prior version, gems had to be fitted into gear, creating a somewhat chaotic arrangement. In PoE2, skills are housed in their own designated sockets, which is a tremendous relief for players like me who prefer not to micromanage gear just to cast spells. Build options remain extensive, but they feel much less cumbersome now.

I appreciate that PoE2 doesn’t require intense min-maxing expertise. If you enjoy delving deep into theorycrafting and optimization, that option is available. However, if your goal is simply to defeat monsters with a cool weapon and collect loot, that’s entirely feasible too.

So, though I skipped PoE, I will likely not ever play it. But PoE2? That’s a title I’m genuinely looking forward to. It feels like an ARPG that values your time and doesn’t make you feel inadequate for being inexperienced. In a genre that often expects you to have a spreadsheet ready on your second monitor, this is a refreshing change.
