Game publisher Nexon has revealed that a refurbished version of its 2004 anime-style MMORPG, Mabinogi Mobile, is set to be released in Korea on March 27, 2025. Pre-registrations for the game, created by Nexon subsidiary devCAT Studio, are now available on the iOS and Android platforms. The mobile game revamps the original’s social activities such as fishing and camping, while making combat and customization more mobile-friendly. A version for the PC that supports cross-play will also be available.
New Features in Mabinogi Mobile
- Designed for Mobile: Overhauled interface for mobile users while still providing traditional keyboard/mouse support on the PC version.
- Enhanced Social Interactions: The game will also features group activities like group musical performances and seasonal festivals.
- Upgraded Storyline: A revised plot set in the familiar universe designed to appeal to both established players and newcomers.
Launched back in 2004, the original Mabinogi, was renowned for its distinctive blend of life-simulation mechanics and fantasy battle scenarios. Its unique elements, such as the ability to compose music, undertake part-time work, or dynamically age characters, made it stand apart among MMORPGs. While it didn’t turn out to be a massive global hit, it carved out a unique niche, predominantly in Korea and within the community of anime RPG players. Surprisingly, the game continues to be live and retains a fanbase across the globe. It has ongoing collaborations with entities like Frieren till March 6, 2025.
Nexon’s shift towards mobile owes much to its prior successful initiatives like MapleStory Mobile released in 2022 and reflects the game industry’s move towards repurposing older franchises for more modern platforms. Yet, maintaining the originality and appeal of the Mabinogi brand while making it mobile-friendly could be challenging. The question is: will this streamlined, mobile-centric approach risk alienating longtime fans who loved the sandbox complexity of the original?
Global Release & Future Updates
As of now, there’s no word on a global release date, but Nexon’s usual strategy involves testing Korean MMORPGs locally before a broader rollout. Personally, I am eager to try this game out. Especially considering that its gameplay emphasizes non-combat social elements.
Presently, Korean fans can pre-register via the official website.
