Earlier this month, Illarion rolled out its May update that added several new enhancements such as new magic runes and advancements in housing features.
The game, originally released in 1999, remains relatively unknown to many. Despite its antiquated graphics turning off some prospective players, the game could be a treasure for enthusiasts of classic MMOs, as it is a free to play open-source MMORPG game.
The game describes itself as follows:
Illarion is an Open Source free-to-play MMORPG emphasizing on player immersion in a detailed fantasy world where role-playing is fans must adhere to. This standout attribute sets Illarion apart from many other online games; it values storytelling and character engagement over standard gameplay mechanics and battling. Players are welcomed to embody their chosen characters, each with backgrounds, personal motivations, and narratives, which fosters a vibrant community reliant on interaction, innovation, and collective storytelling.
Bearing semblance to Ultima Online and Runescape, players have the autonomy to dabble in any skill. However, character attributes determine the speed of proficiency gain and the quality of the output. For example, a perceptive character may excel in archery and culinary, whereas a physically strong character might excel in blacksmithing and hand-to-hand combat. This semi-classless system encourages the exploration of skills and enables unique character builds. Combat is a strategic dance of Rock, Paper, Scissors, executed with simple point-and-click mechanics. Beyond combat, there exists a comprehensive crafting system, particularly Alchemy. Players can also establish their own home ranging from humble cottages to vast castles and luxurious mansions.
Updates as of May:
- Introduction of four new magic runes and puzzles.
- Relaxation of house restrictions with some upgraded to estates.
- Addition of new rooms at the Hemp Necktie Inn as part of the housing feature.
- Reduction in attribute trainer costs through roleplaying.
- Ability to copy text from parchments/books using quills.
- Enhancement in RP points from interactions through drinks, with rarity determining the duration.
- Impact of drink and vessel rarity on RP boost duration and reusability.
- Estates can now accommodate farming fields (except Cadomyr).
- Estates can now create static tools/depots, albeit at a high cost, along with realm-specific options.
- Craft/gathering skills now depend on two attributes, displayed in character creation.
- Quest creator can now use a character name instead of the account name.
