Jagex Asks Players to Vote on RuneScape Microtransaction Future

Microtransactions in live service games are consistently a hot topic among players, especially those microtransactions in MMORPGs like RuneScape that offer shortcuts for in-game progression. As MMORPGs evolve with more content (and developers seek new monetization strategies), these features often appear. Some players appreciate the convenience, while others feel they undermine the original game design.

Developers are well aware of these differing opinions. In some instances, like Jagex with RuneScape, they acknowledge that such monetization can deviate from the game’s original vision. When they feel it’s gone too far, they might make adjustments. However, it’s rare to see a game developer directly asking players to vote on their microtransaction system.

Jagex recently announced a player vote on the future of Treasure Hunter microtransactions. If over 100,000 players vote in favor, Jagex will remove the microtransaction layer from RuneScape. This includes removing over 220 gameplay-enhancing items like XP Lamps, Proteans, and Dummies.

To participate, players can visit the RuneScape site and log in with their character. The vote is a simple “yes” option – a no vote is effectively achieved by not voting. Current vote counts are just over 44.5k and climbing, suggesting the 100k threshold may be reached.
