Is MapleStory Enough to Get You into Idle Mobile Games?

I’m not usually a fan of idle games, and mobile titles haven’t piqued my interest for a while now. That said, I’m open to new experiences! What if a beloved franchise released an idle mobile game?

Nexon is currently conducting a playtest for MapleStory: Idle RPG — an upcoming idle game based on MapleStory. The playtest started on May 14 and is currently exclusive to players in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Australia. However, we in the West will soon have our opportunity to join in.

Players will select an Explorer class and passively hunt enemies—after all, it’s an idle game! Your main focus will be on improving stats, equipment, and abilities. Features include stat point allocation, weapon gacha elements, dungeon challenges, and a mastery system that rewards weapon collection. Unlock passive and active skills through leveling and job advancement, alongside various mechanics for enhancing gear like awakening, promotion, and starforce upgrades. Monetization includes memberships, and cosmetic items can be purchased with premium currency.

While I can’t predict how enjoyable MapleStory: Idle RPG will be, my fondness for the MapleStory aesthetic and nostalgic feelings compel me to give this idle mobile game a chance. However, this isn’t the first spin-off from the MapleStory franchise.

Do you remember MapleStory 2 from 2015? It was a 3D MMORPG sequel featuring a blocky art style and sandbox gameplay. Unfortunately, it had difficulty retaining players and ultimately shut down globally in 2020.

Then there was Pocket MapleStory, which ran from 2014 to 2021. It aimed to deliver the MapleStory experience on mobile devices with simplified mechanics and auto-battle. Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to low player retention and minimal support.

At least MapleStory M is still thriving as a full-fledged mobile MMORPG that includes both real-time and auto-combat mechanics. Recently, Nexon launched MapleStory N, incorporating crypto and NFTs into the mix. Additionally, MapleStory Worlds—similar to Roblox but with a MapleStory twist—is off to a promising start.

Perhaps MapleStory: Idle RPG will fill the current void for MapleStory fans seeking a mobile idle game experience. I just hope it’s not pay-to-win and that a PC version is available too!
