League of Legends: Wild Rift is facing backlash after using AI-generated art in a commemorative video posted on their official Weibo account for the Chinese audience. The video was quickly criticized for its poor quality and glaring visual errors, leading to its removal and an official apology from Riot Games.
The community pointed out numerous issues, including the misspelling of “Anniversary,” characters with deformed or missing limbs, and unsettling animations. Jinx, for example, was depicted wielding weapons resembling those from Call of Duty rather than League of Legends, lacking visual consistency with her iconic spear-laser and laser cannon. Character models also suffered from bizarre inconsistencies such as shifting tattoos and tails inexplicably emerging from the middle of their backs. Even the soundtrack was criticized as confusing and poorly produced.
While Riot claimed the video was created by outsourced artists and didn’t meet their standards, many fans accuse the company of cost-cutting by replacing human artists, a stark contrast to their significant investments in projects like K/DA and Arcane. Some believe Tencent, which manages Riot’s operations in China, is responsible, but overall, the community feels frustrated by a perceived drop in quality from a developer they’ve consistently supported.
