Fans of MMORPGs eagerly awaiting Fantastic Pixel Castle’s Ghost have received potentially concerning news. Greg Street recently announced on LinkedIn that the developer’s partnership with NetEase is concluding, necessitating a search for a new publisher. Critically, failure to secure a new publisher quickly could lead to the closure of Fantastic Pixel Castle and the cancellation of the Ghost project, significantly impacting the development team.
As mentioned, the company is actively seeking a new publisher or investor to continue the project. However, they are also preparing for potential worst-case scenarios and advising their staff to do the same.
In a follow-up post, Street elaborated on their efforts to find a partner, noting that the company has contingency plans that may be more appealing to investors than a full MMORPG. These plans include a “downscoped version of the game that focuses on multiplayer sessions,” similar to Helldivers or Elden Ring Nightreign. While not yet complete, this version would likely be easier to finalize and require less funding.
Furthermore, he emphasized that Fantastic Pixel Castle comprises a “fully staffed, global veteran team that knows how to ship,” suggesting that companies seeking to develop a game but lacking a robust team could greatly benefit from acquiring the Fantastic Pixel Castle team.
