FFXIV Progressing Towards Nintendo Switch Release, Says Yoshi-P

It’s clear that Square Enix has an aim for their flagship MMORPG to reach a broad range of platforms. This is not uncommon for most games, unless they have some sort of “exclusivity” contract. But this is particularly true for Final Fantasy XIV and other similar games that have the potential to generate recurring monthly revenue.

With FFXIV launching on Xbox consoles earlier this year, the anticipation for a Nintendo Switch version is pretty high. Of course, there could be some limitations given Switch’s lower console power compared to its competitors. This doesn’t completely rule out the possibility, though it may necessitate some compromises, especially considering the recent graphics improvement with the Dawntrail expansion.

The game’s producer/director Yoshi-P, however, remains hopeful about the MMO’s future on the Switch. He suggested as much in a few interviews some months ago.

In a Gamescom interview covered by Gamereactor, Yoshi-P mentioned expectations of the MMO’s release on Nintendo consoles. He expressed his ambition for Final Fantasy XIV to become accessible to as many users as possible and mentioned progress and ongoing discussions towards achieving this goal.

Nevertheless, it’s better to take this news lightly as we’ve been hearing about such “conversations” with Nintendo since 2019.

With the ongoing buzz about Switch 2, we can probably expect FFXIV to be a potential fit for the new platform. Cloud-based gaming could certainly be explored as a solution to increase power for a console like the potential Switch 2

One key question that begs an answer is the value brought to FFXIV’s audience by expanding platform coverage, especially with the Xbox release happening so late. The influx of “new players” might not be as imagined given the long tenure of the MMO.

That being said, there could still be considerable interest among current players who would appreciate the flexibility to play on the go using their Switch.
