Would you categorize Drakantos as an MMORPG or a co-op OARPG? The main discussion of Wingeon Game Studios’ June developer blog centers around this very question, stating that while “Drakantos” is essentially an MMORPG, it seeks to provide a unique twist on the traditional formula of the genre.
Drakantos promises to retain common elements of its genre like a richly populated open world, questing, and a marketplace, but it will also introduce unique features like dungeon exploration and map instances, which can be accessed through the game’s Adventurers’ Guild. This feature presents various missions that can be undertaken alone or in groups of up to four members with an ongoing matchmaking system. These missions will host an array of activities, tasks, and side quests, will scale their difficulty level based on the size of the party and offer varying challenges that can be unlocked as one’s power level increases and one earns higher guild ranks.
Questing will also be delivered in an unconventional format, rather than being predominantly about character progression. Quests will instead unlock features like systems, shops, and artifacts which can be shared across the entire account. Moreover, quests will vary depending on the character or character archetype selected by players.
Besides identifying itself as an MMORPG, the dev blog shares a few other pieces of information, including a video preview of the character Liam, exhibiting open world and dungeon gameplay. It also announces that further development blogs will be released quarterly, while other updates will be shared on social media and Discord platforms. It provides an initial launch timeline for mid-2025, which is subject to change should Wingeon feel Drakantos is not resonating as an MMORPG intended for long-term play. In essence, Drakantos is indeed an MMORPG.
