It has been officially announced that Star Resonance will launch in China on July 17, with a global release anticipated later this year. For those unfamiliar, this upcoming free-to-play MMORPG from Shanghai Bokura Network Technology can be seen as Blue Protocol 2.0. Honestly, the news is a bit disheartening for me.
I participated in the final closed beta of Blue Protocol (developed by Bandai Namco) before its closure. Despite the negative feedback surrounding it and its eventual shutdown, I had an enjoyable experience. I had been eagerly anticipating it since day one, so when Blue Protocol was canceled before launching in the West, it felt like a significant loss.
Now, with Star Resonance on the horizon — basically a spiritual successor, but this time with support from Tencent instead of Amazon Games — I’m feeling the excitement all over again. Unfortunately, those of us outside of China are left waiting, with only vague indications of a global launch in 2025.
This approach to release is quite frustrating. What if the game faces another demise before we have the chance to play it? The staggered updates and region-locked content diminish anticipation — it divides the community before it even has the opportunity to unite. I get that there are logistical and regulatory challenges involved. Still, after years of waiting for Blue Protocol, seeing Star Resonance teased and then confined behind another barrier? It’s tough not to feel disappointed.
I’m still excited, don’t get me wrong. I’ve been looking forward to this game since Blue Protocol was first revealed back in 2019. I’ll be monitoring Star Resonance closely, hoping it will be worth the long wait. I just really dislike the waiting, you know?
