Sea of Thieves improves mischievous weapons and hamstrings its PvE mode in December update

December update enhances tricky weapons and weakens PvE mode in Sea of Thieves

The much-anticipated December update for Sea of Thieves by Rare is here, introducing a bunch of tweaks to the clever weapons of Season 14 and another round of modifications to the PvE Safer Seas mode.

With this update, enhancements have been made to the grapple gun’s distance and retraction speed. It also allows players to switch dart types for the blowpipe weapon using a radial menu and prevents the magic-melded merfruit item from being chosen as a default food source. However, the launch of the mimic dart will be delayed since it has not passed the internal quality threshold and will be introduced next year.

The patch also includes an “upgrade” to Safer Seas, increasing gold and prestige gains to match High Seas PvP mode, but limiting reputation rank from 40 to 25. This modification is seen by Rare Ltd as a strategy to acclimate new participants to the game and motivate them to enter the gankbox, despite the mode being identified as a gankbox escape route.

Touching on the topic of steering players towards High Seas, seasonal happenings for this mode are on the horizon: The annual Festival of Giving is set to start on the 18th of December, bestowing players with a complimentary holiday flag, double returns on treasure deposits, and daily offerings of guilded voyages. In addition, the game will inaugurate the Gold and Glory week event that extends extra gold and prestige from the 30th of December until the 6th of January to welcome 2024.
