After spending three years in the development phase, the NFT-backed F2P shooter DEADROP, a project by Midnight Society, is shut down. It is not anticipated to meet its likely release timeframe of 2024/2025 as per a tweet from the group. The engineers behind Midnight Society hope those from its 55-strong team find positions in other studios.
Midnight Society, co-established by Dr Disrespect (Guy Beahm)—later separated from the company after Beahm confessed to inappropriate chats with a minor—was comprised of industry veterans from Call of Duty and other key shooting games.
“Today is the day we declare the closure of Midnight Society, marking the end of three exceptional years backed up by an extraordinary team of over 55 developers,” states the message. This surprising news emerged just over four months after the company announced “major layoffs” were made.
Being a shooter game associated with NFT acquisitions posed a challenging task for DEADROP from the inception, particularly given that many gamers show disdain for NFTs/blockchain, even in its prime. The project also likely suffered due to the separation from Beahm, who helped fund it.
Meanwhile, Dr Disrespect has his formerly deactivated YouTube earning reactivated. This comes amidst news of the Midnight Society shut down.
Currently, there is no clue if the initial investors will receive any refunds due to this closure. We will update this piece if we hear anything official on this subject. However, it’s best not to get your hopes up.
