Bungie Retires Unstable Cores Before Destiny 2: Renegades Launch

Bungie announced on Reddit that Unstable Cores, a key infusion currency in Destiny 2, will soon be fully deprecated. The decision follows player feedback and internal review, with them concluding that the system has been too restrictive and has not meaningfully contributed to gear customization or build diversity. This change is part of a broader economy rebalancing that aims to make progression smoother and more flexible for players of the free-to-play shooter as Destiny 2: Renegades launches on December 2.

In the revised system, infusion — the process of raising a weapon or armor piece’s power level — will instead require Enhancement Cores and Glimmer. Bungie explained that Unstable Cores limited experimentation across power levels, discouraging players from trying new weapons or maintaining different gear sets for endgame content. Although a specific patch date for the full removal has not yet been confirmed, they stated that work is already underway to finalize the change.

Destiny 2 Update 9.1.5.1 introduced two temporary measures to help players prepare. A one-time reward of 777,777 Unstable Cores is available from the Tower catch-up chest, giving them a final opportunity to use the currency before its removal. And, the number of Unstable Cores required for high-level infusion is reduced, easing the process until the currency is completely phased out.

Bungie plans to share more details on the economy update as development progresses.
