Blizzard’s Hearthstone is debuting an unconventional “pet adoption” feature, but this digital companion comes with a controversial price tag.
The collectible card game recently revealed King Krush, its first interactive cosmetic pet that perches on your game board. This animated dinosaur reacts to gameplay events and mirrors your hero’s emotes, but obtaining it requires navigating a contentious monetization system.
As highlighted by PC Gamer, King Krush is exclusively available through a Darkmoon Faire gacha mechanic from July 8-29. Each spin (priced at ~$2 after the first) carries a 0.1% drop rate, though players are guaranteed the pet by their 10th attempt – potentially totaling $158 for what’s currently the game’s sole companion.
While Blizzard positions this as a premium cosmetic, the community isn’t rolling over quietly. As discussions on Reddit show, many players argue the predatory pricing sets a dangerous precedent for future content. Whether this dinosaur companion is worth a triple-A game’s price remains, as they say, in the eye of the credit card holder.
