Astroneer-spinoff Starseeker talks multiplayer co-op focus, monetization, and beta sign-ups

Astroneer Spinoff Starseeker Discusses Multiplayer Co-op Focus, Monetization, and Beta Sign-ups

System Era Softworks’ announcement of its second game, Starseeker, has sparked significant interest among fans, especially those who enjoyed the studio’s first title, the survival sandbox Astroneer. To address this curiosity, creative director Adam Bromell hosted a Q&A session, offering deeper insights into the upcoming game.

Bromell emphasized that Starseeker is designed as a multiplayer-focused experience, encouraging players to team up with friends or others they meet during their journeys to undertake cooperative exploration missions. “Our goal is to create experiences that unite all players,” he explained. “Starseeker is about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with others. […] While it’s not an MMO, we aim to foster a sense of teamwork and shared adventure.”

While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, the developers hinted that more will be unveiled this summer. They also noted that fans of Astroneer will find familiar elements, such as PvE-only gameplay, co-op mechanics, and planetary deformation. However, Starseeker will introduce new features like advanced physics, water mechanics, gliding, interactive scanning, and creatures that dynamically impact gameplay.

Addressing concerns about Astroneer, the developers reassured fans that a dedicated team continues to work on the survival sandbox, with plans to expand its content. A livestream is also in the works to discuss upcoming updates for Astroneer.

Regarding development progress, Bromell confirmed that Starseeker is currently in the pre-alpha stage. However, he stressed that the game will not release in an unfinished state. Beta tests and other player trials will be conducted as development advances, and interested players can sign up via Discord. “Our aim is to deliver a polished and refined release,” stated communications director Joe Tirado during the stream.

Bromell also clarified that Starseeker requires an internet connection—there will be no offline single-player mode. However, solo play is supported, though the game’s design naturally encourages player interaction. “The game fosters friendships by connecting players within the space station hub and showcasing their progress,” he added.

Additional highlights from the Q&A session include:

  • Crossplay support remains undetermined due to platform-specific restrictions and policies.
  • Procedural generation will primarily facilitate faster development for planets and expeditions, but the focus will be on player mastery and familiarity with environments.
  • Both keyboard/mouse and gamepad controls will be supported, with a “controller first” approach.
  • Starseeker will launch as a premium, box-priced game. Bromell expressed strong opposition to a free-to-play monetization model.
  • A narrative-driven structure will guide the game, inspired by the optimistic futurism of Star Trek.
