In a recent Producer’s Letter, XL GAMES’ Executive Producer Ham Yongjin shared insights about their vision for ArcheAge Chronicles, a new installment in the ArcheAge series.
Instead of being a direct sequel or a reboot, Chronicles reimagines the original MMORPG universe, taking place 50 years after the original game’s events and providing a fresh experience in gameplay and tone. Set in a rejuvenated Auroria, Chronicles allows players to step into the shoes of pioneers returning to a once-abandoned land, now vibrant with new life and hidden enigmas.
Departing from the franchise’s MMO roots, this new title transitions into a shared-world online action RPG, featuring faster, more dynamic combat mechanics, including real-time dodging, weapon switching, and skill-based combo chains. The game prioritizes exploration over standard questing, encouraging players to discover secrets and weave stories through natural encounters.
Essential systems from the original game, such as crafting, lifeskills, and player housing, are receiving modernization. For example, housing now remains persistent across channels and is enriched with social features like NPC roommates and interactive decoration, aimed at enhancing community involvement.
Though still in the early stages of development, Chronicles has completed its initial focus group testing, with more playtesting opportunities on the horizon. Ham remarked that the game is designed for both long-time fans and newcomers, describing it as “a fresh start that retains the heart of ArcheAge as it moves into a new era.”
While it’s uncertain if the game will follow a free-to-play model, it’s likely since the original ArcheAge did.
