Acclaim Returns After 20 Years

This news isn’t explicitly about free-to-play games, and currently, it’s unknown if F2P will be part of Acclaim’s future strategy. Considering their history, it might not be, but with two decades passed since their 2004 bankruptcy, anything is on the table.

To elaborate, the video game publisher Acclaim has been resurrected after two decades. This comeback was announced (or rather, teased) with a brief press release and accompanying trailer. The press release promises “big news” and encourages readers to “get ready for the next era of gaming” as “the legendary name in video games returns.” They also tout “new worlds, bold ideas, and the next wave of unforgettable games.”

According to Wikipedia, a group of executives acquired the trademark and are relaunching Acclaim as an indie publisher. The Wikipedia entry also suggests they might acquire former Acclaim intellectual properties.

The current unknown is what kind of games they will be developing or publishing. Acclaim’s bankruptcy predates the surge in popularity of free-to-play, live-service games. However, this business model is now a major focus for many companies. As a publisher, Acclaim has the potential to maintain a more diverse portfolio than a purely development-focused company. Therefore, all possibilities are open.
