Reports Indicate SEGA’s Crazy Taxi Revival Will Be An Open World, Massively Multiplayer Game

We learned back in 2023, courtesy of The Game Awards, that SEGA was planning to revive several fan-favorite franchises. They revealed plans for Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and hinted at a possible Crazy Taxi comeback in the trailer.

The trailer was a standout moment of the awards show on a personal level, as I’m a fan of several of the games showcased. For your convenience, I’ve included the trailer below to jog your memory.

Understanding more about the future of Crazy Taxi has been possible thanks to a recent video on SEGA’s YouTube channel. While SEGA is already heavily investing in the forthcoming title, the video shares that they are still seeking out additional team members for the project.

The video also suggests some significant changes to the game, including the introduction of multiplayer elements. Now, bear in mind we’re reliant on auto-translate here, but it appears the game will become “massively multiplayer”. The extent of the multiplayer feature is uncertain at this point, but we are given a glimpse of a beautifully designed open world that the organization refers to as a “theme park”. A memorable sight is the traditional yellow taxi speeding through this world.

Intriguingly, the video offers footage of what could be a player-controlled police car chasing a taxi, which suggests some exciting possible gameplay scenarios.

Take a look at the video below and prepare yourself to rake in some fares with your passengers.
