Remember back in April when System Era Softworks, the creators of Astroneer, teased a new spinoff? That game, Starseeker, set in the same universe, promised an even greater focus on multiplayer. Now, thanks to this week’s gameplay reveal showcase, we have a much clearer picture of what’s in store.
The studio describes Starseeker as “a game about discovery, cooperative expeditions, and camaraderie.” Players will explore deep space aboard the ESS Starseeker, collaborating to complete planet-wide objectives across diverse star systems using advanced technology.
Essentially, you’ll team up in four-player squads for timed expeditions to alien planets. Your mission: explore, complete objectives, and grab loot. The developers warn of dangerous creatures, unique encounters, and valuable resources, adding that failure is a distinct possibility. Success hinges on collaboration and smart use of your advanced tech.
This setup leans heavily into extraction game territory, but with a strong emphasis on community collaboration.
“This is a game about camaraderie,” the developers emphasize. “We want to offer a game experience that breeds altruism… One way we’re doing this is with community goals, shared missions with the whole Starseeker community of players.” In short, exploring alien planets requires a space station full of players working together.
The FAQ confirms that Starseeker is a live service game (although System Era prefers the term “expandable game,” emphasizing that players shouldn’t feel pressured to play constantly). While solo play is possible, an offline mode is not.
Keen to try it out? You can sign up for the beta through the game’s FirstLook platform (Discord required).
