5 Must-Have Features for New MMO Launches

It’s often surprising when game developers announce the addition of features that seem like they should have been there from the start, especially in newer games. You’d expect devs to learn from past games, yet some still launch without these essential elements.

I understand that development requires prioritizing efforts due to budget and time constraints. However, certain features significantly enhance enjoyment and accessibility, making the game more appealing to a wider audience.

The goal isn’t to create a game that appeals to everyone – that’s likely impossible. Players have diverse preferences, and forcing content won’t change that. But implementing standard quality-of-life features can make a significant impact, even in free-to-play games.

It seems more efficient to include these features from the beginning rather than retroactively adding them later. Consider these key aspects:

MMO Requirements 2

Easy-to-manage Inventory

A balance is needed between excessive inventory space that becomes cluttered and limited space that restricts sorting. It’s frustrating to be stuck with either an unorganized mess or constant trips to the bank with limited sorting options.

A tab system for separating gear, crafting materials, gathering items, and potions should be a standard feature.

Housing

Some games have “memento” items that players are forced to carry, because there is no place to store them. While some of these items can be stashed in a bank, that’s not always desirable. And tossing them away is also not a viable option, so players will have these items stuck in their bags forever.

Housing provides a great solution. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, such as full neighborhoods or islands. Even a simple house with shelves can be effective.

It’s encouraging to see older MMOs adding housing or, as with Guild Wars 2, expanding existing systems.

MMO Requirements 3

Accommodations for the colorblind

Many games now include accommodations for colorblindness, like symbols. However, these can be easily missed amidst the chaos of on-screen text and effects. Furthermore, some visual cues blend into the environment, making them difficult to see even for those without colorblindness. Prioritizing clear, distinct cues benefits all players from the start.

Ability combos

This may not be suitable for all games, particularly those with fewer keybinds. It should be optional and possibly restricted in PvP. However, the ability to combine skill combinations onto a single button can greatly improve quality of life for players struggling with numerous hotbars.

The ability to pet dogs, cats, and other fuzzy critters

Many games feature animals, and if you include puppies, they should be petable from the beginning.
