MMOBomb

What’s the funniest reason you’ve ever chosen a game?

Earlier today, we published a post regarding Singularity 6’s future plans for their delightful MMORPG Palia. The developer has recently launched the game on both Xbox and PlayStation while releasing the Elderwood expansion update, and they are already hinting at future content. Among the new features is an update that will introduce animal husbandry, showcasing a few adorable critters likely to be part of this addition.

One of those critters appears to be a Scottish Highland cow. For those who haven’t encountered one, these large, fluffy bovines could certainly use a bit of hair gel to tame their bangs. While they are massive creatures with impressive horns capable of causing some damage, they are undeniably fluffy! Although I’ve never met one in person, the prospect of having one as a pet is almost enough motivation for me to dive into the game.

This amusing thought led me to reflect on the other quirky reasons I’ve chosen to play certain games. Yes, I frequently mention story as my primary motivator for gaming, as I thoroughly enjoy compelling storytelling. However, there are numerous other whimsical factors at play. I’m quite fond of creative minds who approach their work with a lighthearted attitude.

Saints Row The Third

A perfect example? The Saints Row series (excluding the reboot, or whatever it’s called) is among my all-time favorites. Why did I start playing it? Well, when Saints Row: The Third was released, a friend gifted it to me, mentioning that after seeing the infamous purple… er… “bat” weapon, he thought it would be right up my alley. The game happened to be fun, with characters I genuinely enjoyed. My real affection for it, however, stemmed from its playful tone. Yes, that particular weapon was a silly reason to pick up the game, but it ultimately turned out well.

I ventured into American McGee’s Alice because I am a massive fan of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I was drawn to Viva Piñata due to the concept of nurturing cannibalistic piñatas on a tranquil island. Various games have caught my attention simply because of their unique art styles. Okami is a prime example.

None of these elements guaranteed that the games would be good. I never delved into them any deeper than that initial whimsy.

However, MMO and live service titles differ slightly. There’s so much happening in these genres that if you plan to invest a considerable amount of time, you’ll want to consider more than just, “does this one amusing aspect appeal to me?” before starting. That said, I have acted on impulse before. When Guild Wars 2 launched, I was fascinated by the concept of a race of “lettuce people,” and that alone spurred me to try it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to keep me engaged long-term.

Guild Wars 2 Sylvari

The advantage of free-to-play games is that you can indulge in a fit of whimsy; if it doesn’t resonate, all you lose is some time. So yes, I’m likely to jump into Palia for my own Highland cow. Honestly, I should have tried the game sooner, especially considering its cozy nature, but I was holding out for a PlayStation version. Looks like I don’t have to wait any longer. Just let me wrap up my time with Zenless Zone Zero first. (And no, I didn’t choose that game solely for whimsy, though now that I’m invested, the bangboo are simply too charming to leave behind.)
