The hellbugs are back in action today! If you’ve been keeping tabs on the surprise comeback of the F2P shooter MMO Defiance, now’s the time to jump back in. Fawkes Games successfully acquired the IP from gamigo and has resurrected the game in arguably one of the most bizarre revivals in recent history.
The release today renders the original 2013 rendition of the game accessible directly from the game’s site. Depending on how it performs, Fawkes Games hasn’t dismissed the idea of reintroducing it to consoles and launching on other platforms such as Steam. Future development isn’t off the table either. Yet, as highlighted in their FAQ, these considerations are subject to the game’s success and whether it warrants further enhancements. I wouldn’t get my hopes too high, though.
No doubt, many dedicated Defiance enthusiasts will dedicate hours to restarting the game anew (that’s right, you have to start from the beginning) and may even invest some money into it. I’m glad for them. I’ll also be giving the game another go. However, it’s reasonable to say that if such a large fanbase existed capable of supporting new updates, the game wouldn’t have been discontinued in the first place.
Regardless, let’s revel in today’s comeback. Create a new character and discover a now dystopian Earth, radically transformed and housing various alien species amidst humanity. San Francisco is in dire need of a restoration of order, and that’s your mission.
It’s time to gear up, exterminate some hellbugs, and savour the game while it lasts if you’ve been missing it since its termination.
