So steamy.

Steam alters Season Pass DLC guidelines to prioritize player compensation

When a game developer offers a season pass DLC pack on Steam, they make a promise to deliver future DLC. While this concept isn’t new, the most recent Steam guidelines aim to rectify issues with these season pass packs. Essentially, the new rules specify that a developer can’t just declare a season pass based on hopes of future DLC and then abandon ship if things go awry; they must have disclosed plans for DLC with set dates.

If DLC gets scrapped? Players must be refunded for the cancelled DLC. That’s the bottom line.

Clearly, this is beneficial to gamers; it loads more responsibility onto developers and ensures that any purchased DLC will be released and, at the very least, hopefully worth the expense, with certain conditions for “deluxe edition” pre-orders. It remains to be seen whether this will solve some of the more serious issues with DLC sales, however, it’s evident with this change that the power is shifting towards the players.
