Foamstars by Square Enix Turns F2P for Second Chance

Square Enix appears to repeatedly stumble upon self-imposed hurdles throughout their history. I’m not suggesting their shooter Foamstars is revolutionary. It’s decent, but I only gave it a shot as it was complimentary for PS Plus subscribers upon its release. Without this, I doubt I would have paid the box fee.

The game is somewhat amusing, and despite Square’s dislike of the comparison, it shares many similarities with Splatoon in terms of gameplay with the added feature of verticality due to your ability to climb the foam you’ve sprayed. However, I disengaged when match waiting times increased.

The upfront box fee and exclusive availability on PS4 and PS5 are perplexing decisions considering the need for a large player base in the game’s genre. These decisions throttle your player count even before kick-off. Unless the game brings something groundbreaking, these entry barriers seem unwarranted.

One such barrier has been lifted today. Foamstars still remains bewilderingly a PS exclusive, but it has waived off the box fee. Transitioning to the new F2P model must have been facile given the resemblance between the paid version’s cosmetics/season cash shop and most others in this field.

Seize the opportunity to play Foamstars for free on the PlayStation Store and dive into Season 8, “Diamond Jam.” More maps are now accessible in modes that previously restricted their use, and the introduction of a fresh “Diamond Chips” currency will facilitate the procurement of new cosmetics. Diamond Jam concludes on November 7th.
