Blizzard’s Third Attempt at StarCraft Shooter Game

On October 8th, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg will release a new book named Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, which explores the celebrated gaming company’s chronicle, current state amidst several turmoils, and its possible future with Microsoft. A few days back, I reflected on an adapted clipping from the book that uncovered the real reason behind Co-founder Mike Morhaime’s exit from the organization.

Although the book is packed with numerous intriguing gaming insights, Schreier stated during an interview on IGN’s Podcast Unlocked that his objective for penning the book was not merely gossip. Rather, he wanted “…to tell a story, and focus on stuff that had happened.”

A snippet from the book haunting the headlines refers to a potential StarCraft shooter game. According to Schreier, “A significant number of developers were let go, while a handful stayed behind with Hay to potentially spawn a new StarCraft shooter. Maybe after StarCraft Ghost and Ares, the third try would be lucky,” “Hay” designates Dan Hay, a former Ubisoft employee, who joined Blizzard, originally to head the now scraped survival game Blizzard was planning earlier this year.

In the book, Schreier does hint that the game may not be in the construction phase now, but confirms it was during the book writing period. Since the game’s fate was uncertain during the book’s publication process, he adds, “Which is [to say] yes, they are working on a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard,”

Could this be the time for Blizzard to finally see a StarCraft shooter game? It’s a fascinating idea, and if they persist, it could become a reality.

To see it come to life is something I would certainly love, what do you think?
