Gambling Simulation Gets Video Games 18+ Rating in Australia

Recently, there have been modifications to the video game classification system by the Australian government. These alterations are to be implemented in less than a week. The modifications target both real-world money expenditures on items such as loot boxes and simulated betting in games.

As per a report on Vooks, an M rating will be applied to future games with in-game purchases that have an element of chance. This implies they are not appropriate for anyone below the age of 15. It appears that games like Fortnite and a multitude of gacha games and ccgs will be included in this category based on the definition of “chance-based” as “loot boxes or other randomized rewards.”

There’s more to the alterations. The new classification also targets “simulated gambling” including “video games featuring interactive activities like slot machine simulators, roulette wheels, or other age-restricted betting or gambling services”. Games that meet these criteria are now facing an 18+ rating that legally limits the game from being sold to underage individuals.

The positive side for developers is that this only affects future classified games. However, the downside is that game updates may necessitate reclassification, which might end up assigning them the 18+ rating.
