Not every games’ developers have been willing to ensure their products are compatible with non-Windows platforms, which leaves Linux users a difficult choice: stick with the familiar environment of Windows, devote considerable time to modifying a game’s platform performance, or discover games that naturally operate on their platform.

Fortunately, several resources are available to assist Linux users to navigate this terrain. One such resource is ProtonDB, which uses user-generated reviews to report the performance of different games on Linux. Creations found on Linux through Steam are assessed and labeled with a score ranging from ‘borked’ to ‘platinum’, with ‘borked’ implying serious performance issues and ‘platinum’ indicating a seamless gaming experience requiring no user adjustments.

Pixel Worlds: MMO Sandbox

This game, as inferred by its name, is a pixelated sandbox-style game where players can traverse a block-built universe, designing and building elements within the game, embarking on dungeon quests, farming, and more. Pixel Worlds boasts a platinum rating on ProtonDB and also boasts compatibility with Chromebook. However, it has yet to be confirmed if it will perform on the Steam Deck.

Eldevin

Designed by indie developers Hunted Cow Games, Eldevin is a retro-style MMORPG that centers around storytelling. The game features more than 160 worlds to explore and holds yet another platinum rating. It’s also compatible with the Steam Deck.

RuneScape

In a delightful surprise, both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape have earned a gold rating and are playable on the SteamDeck.

Eve Online

Eve Online, a game known for its ‘space spreadsheet’ style, amusingly seems an organic fit for Linux. With a gold rating on ProtonDB, it’s also playable on Steam Deck.

Final Fantasy XIV

Not unexpectedly, Final Fantasy XIV also features on this list, despite seeming somewhat incompatible with Linux on the surface. It too has a gold rating and is compatible with Steam Deck.
