6 MMOs Playable on Mac

Apple’s Macintosh computers have not typically been the go-to choice for gamers. Part of this is due to the architecture of the systems, which favored Apple-specific processors, and a closed-off environment that, while offering optimization and less vulnerability to hacking, meant fewer game developers designed for the platform. As a result, games that were created for Macs often ended up in the hands of other developers for conversion at a later date.

With the integration of Intel processors, Macs have seen an increase in the number of developers creating games for the platform. This has broadened the gaming options available for Mac users, even though the selection still falls short of what one might wish.

We’ve gathered a selection of Massively Multiplayer Online (MMOs) games that can be enjoyed on the Mac platform. Some of these games were released concurrently on Mac and Windows, and several were added to Mac’s gaming repertoire by their developers at a later time.

RuneScape

Jagex’s RuneScape has proven its longevity as one of the oldest MMORPGs and offers ample content for players. With a history dating back to 1999, players can access RuneScape on virtually all platforms, including Mac.

World of Tanks

World of Tanks, a war strategy game developed by Wargaming, is also available on practically all platforms. Continually updated with fresh content influenced by historical warfare machinery and weaponry, this game also aids in historical vehicle restoration for museum displays.

Rust

Facepunch Studios’ Rust is a perfect fit for survival game enthusiasts. You begin with nothing on an isolated island and must adapt and fend off threats to your existence. With over a decade of existence and countless updates, it’s a great fit for players seeking a self-challenging experience.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft reigned supreme as the preeminent fantasy MMORPG for a considerable amount of time. This recognition partly stemmed from its simultaneous availability on Mac at launch when the platform was often overlooked by game developers. Notably, during this time, Aspyr was occupied with porting single-player games from EA for Mac, although multiplayer games remained scarce.

Eve Online

Eve Online is another game that was available on Mac from inception. However, due to its initial limited release, a four-year wait for global access, and a non-casual gaming environment, it did not seize the MMORPG throne. Despite this, players who enjoy its specific gameplay will find it runs smoothly on the Mac platform.

Path of Exile

Grinding Gear Games added their popular free-to-play ARPG Path of Exile to the Mac game library after they launched a Mac-specific client. Even though the process had some initial challenges, the game is now available for download via Steam.
